A woman has been killed and five others, including a four-year-old girl, injured when a large eucalyptus tree crashed on to a wedding party taking pictures at a Southern California park.

Several people were trapped under the tree at Penn Park in Whittier, Los Angeles County Fire Department said. The little girl is in a critical condition with head injuries, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Video from the scene showed fire crews using chainsaws to cut through the downed branches.

Four of the injured had scrapes and bruises, officials said.

Witnesses described hearing a loud crack and seeing people run from the area.

The tree could have been weakened by California's ongoing drought and recent heavy rain could have contributed to its fall, officials said, adding that a n expert would assess the area on Sunday.
