Woman executed over illicit wealth

A Chinese official dubbed the "land granny" was yesterday executed after amassing 145 million yuan (€23m) in bribes and illicit wealth.

Luo Yaping (50) was head of a land sub-bureau in a district of Fushun, a city in northeast China, and used her power over land development and compensation to accumulate a fortune between 2001 and 2007.

Banks probed on dictators' funds

Four Swiss banks are being investigated over their handling of hundreds of millions of dollars in assets linked to the deposed leaders of Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

Switzerland's financial regulator FINMA says it examined 20 banks and found that four institutions had made mistakes warranting "enforcement proceedings". The regulator says in two cases banks failed to notify FINMA they had a client relationship with persons on the sanctions lists.

Western Black Rhino now extinct

The Western Black Rhino of Africa has been declared officially extinct. Two other subspecies of rhinoceros are close to meeting the same fate, the International Union for Conservation of Nature announced yesterday.

The Northern White Rhino of central Africa is now "possibly extinct" in the wild and the Javan Rhino is "probably extinct" in Vietnam.

Morgan quits US talent show

Piers Morgan has quit his role on 'America's Got Talent' to concentrate on his US chat show. He is giving up his position on the show that made him a star across the Atlantic after six years.

Last year he stepped down from 'Britain's Got Talent' because of his commitments in the US.

Policeman sacked for web drug claim

A senior police officer has been sacked over claims he boasted of taking drugs on a dating website.

The unnamed 46-year-old London-based chief inspector was also said to have trawled the internet looking for women who wanted sex with a man in a uniform. The officer was fired after a two-day misconduct hearing.

Brutal cat attack caught on CCTV

Animal welfare officials are looking for a man caught on CCTV swinging a cat by its tail.

Footage shows the animal attacker seemingly dancing down a road in Kent, England, with the cat at arm's length for over 30 seconds.
