Webcam spy given 30-day jail term

A former Rutgers University student, who was convicted of hate crimes for using a webcam to view his roommate and another man kissing days before the roommate killed himself, will go to jail for 30 days.

A judge in New Jersey gave 20-year-old Dharun Ravi a 30-day jail term followed by probation yesterday.

Japanese team rice to occasion

Japan have come up with a novel way of preparing themselves for this year's London Olympic men's soccer tournament -- training with odd-bouncing triangular 'rice balls'.

The balls, shaped like the traditional Japanese 'onigiri' rice ball wrapped in seaweed, were fired at goalkeepers during training.

People can see their faces in light during the centenary year of the famous Blackpool Illuminations.

The celebrations include the new Centenary Heads section, composed of Andy Warhol-style pop art images which will feature the faces of people who want to be part of the annual attraction. There are 210 spaces available for the display.

William Shakespeare's classic tragedy 'Romeo and Juliet' is to be turned into a pop-rock opera.

Buyers at the Marche du Film in Cannes are being asked to back the new adaptation of the bard's work, which promises trashy trailer park divisions, rock, rap and pop. Producers of 'Romeo and Juliet: A Love Song', shot in New Zealand, describe it as a version for the YouTube generation.

US mother gets 20 years for gunshot

A Florida mother of three was jailed for 20 years after firing a bullet at a wall to scare off her husband when she felt he was threatening her.

Marissa Alexander (31), who had never been in trouble before, claimed self defence when she was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Despite no one being hurt, the judge was bound by state law to sentence her to 20 years in prison.

Summer classics back in charts

A flurry of Donna Summer classics have re-entered the charts after fans flocked to buy the disco star's records following her death.

Ms Summer lost her fight against lung cancer last Thursday, at the age of 63.
