WATCH: Graphic undercover video shows employees cruelly mistreating pigs at slaughterhouse

Sarah-Jane Murphy

Footage has emerged of slaughterhouse workers beating pigs with paddles and dragging the terrified animals across the factory floor.

Some of the pigs have open sores on their bodies and are visibly shaking in terror before they are slaughtered.

The video was secretly filmed at one of America's biggest slaughterhouses in Austin, Minnesota.

An employee can be overheard saying that he believes the slaughterhouse could be shut down if authorities were aware of conditions there.

An edited version of the video was released on social media after being filmed earlier this year by an investigator.

The animal rights nonprofit organisation 'Compassion over Killing', has passed the footage on to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and has been assisting the federal investigation.

One worker appears to be enjoying the horrific acts of cruelty against the pigs, proudly telling one of his co-workers : "That one was definitely alive," as the pigs move down the conveyor belt.

The pigs are also shown being beaten with paddles and kicked by employees as they wait to be slaughtered in the factory.
