Video: Bull injures 40 in Spain rampage

A bull turned the tables on spectators at a bullring in Spain, leaping into the stands and injuring at least 40 people.

The incident happened in Tafalla, in the northern region of Navarra, during a contest of recortadores, in which participants attempt to dodge the bull.

One animal managed to scale the perimeter fence and rampage through the stands, sending dozens of spectators fleeing for safety during the event.

Most of the injuries were minor and were treated by medical staff on site, but five victims were taken to hospital for further attention, including a 10-year-old boy who is in a serious condition with stomach wounds. Another victim was gored in the back.

Spectators and officials tied a rope around the bull to bring it under control and Spanish media reported that the animal was later removed from the arena with a crane and killed.

The incident comes at a time when Spain is split over whether bullfighting should be outlawed.

Catalonia became the first major Spanish region to ban it last month after heated debate that pitted animal rights against a pillar of traditional culture. The ban will take effect from 2010 in the north-eastern coastal region whose capital is Barcelona.
