Veteran (90) takes giant leap of faith

A US man who learned how to use a parachute as a navy pilot during World War Two has finally made his first jump -- at the age of 90.

Lester Slate was guided to the ground by a tandem jumper on Sunday, and was accompanied by another skydiver trailing a US flag. The jump in Maine was a 90th birthday present to himself.

Women in need of confidence boost

Women are less confident than men, believing it holds them back in life, according to a study.

A survey of 2,000 adults by car firm Peugeot found that three out of four women agreed they lacked confidence, compared with 57pc of men. Looks played a big part in how women felt about themselves, but hardly registered among men.

Wedding guests end up in hospital

Police said 427 people have been taken to hospital for food poisoning after eating at a wedding in Sri Lanka.

Police spokesman Ajith Rohana said 168 men, 166 women and 93 children were admitted to hospital suffering vomiting and diarrhoea. They had eaten a meal at a wedding in the town of Vavunativu.

Anti-war artwork leads to conflict

Officials have threatened to pull down an anti-war sculpture outside Santa Monica's Civic Centre which has divided residents of the California beach town.

Nearly three storeys high and shaped like an atomic bomb's giant mushroom cloud, 'Chain Reaction' was given to the city as a gift in 1991. City officials said it's now in danger of falling down and if enthusiasts cannot raise the $200,000 (€163,000) needed to repair it, the city should simply get rid of it.

Baby-girl joy for Uma Thurman

US actress Uma Thurman has given birth to a baby girl, her publicist confirmed.

The 'Kill Bill' star (42) has two other children, 13-year-old Maya Ray and 10-year-old Levon Roan, with ex-husband Ethan Hawke. This is her first child with her partner, the financier Arpad Busson.

Coogan cleared of driving offence

Comedian Steve Coogan was found not guilty of a driving offence after it emerged a friend was behind the wheel of his car when it was caught speeding.

The 46-year-old comic told a court it had "slipped my mind" that his friend was driving the Range Rover when it was caught speeding, a Brighton court heard.
