US plans full Afghan exit in 2014

Raf Sanchez Washington

All US forces could be removed from Afghanistan by the end of 2014 under a "zero option" plan being considered by US President Barack Obama.

After months of growing frustration with Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, the US is said to be considering a total withdrawal which would leave Afghan forces alone to face the Taliban.

While the US has previously committed to ending combat operations by the end of next year, it has long been thought that a small force of Americans would remain behind for training and counter-terrorism missions.

The "zero option" is gaining support among Mr Obama's advisers after weeks of arguments with the Afghan leader.
