South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar met on Friday for the first time since ethnic fighting broke out in Africa's youngest country in December, a Reuters witness said.

Kiir and Machar held talks in Ethiopia's capital amid growing international pressure for a peace deal to end a conflict that the United States has warned could descend into genocide. The pair shook hands.
