Two men on a powerful motorcycle opened fire on three policemen on the outskirts of the Tunisian coastal city of Sousse, killing one before speeding away.

The Tunisian interior ministry said the other two men were not wounded, while the one shot died on the way to the hospital.

Earlier statements from security officials had said the other two had also been hit. Police official Sahbi Jouini said the attackers used a rifle.

The ministry said a vast search was under way for the attackers, who shot at the police while they were on the edge of the city of Sousse waiting for transport to the nearby town Kairouan.

On June 26, a gunman killed 38 tourists on a beach in Sousse in an attack later claimed by the Islamic State group.

Tunisian police have been carrying out sweeps across the country, arresting hundreds in an effort to crush the terrorist threat against the state.

Government officials blame neighbouring Libya for harbouring militants targeting the country.
