Seven killed as Taliban attack US consulate in Afghanistan

Taliban militants have staged a suicide car bombing and a gunfight with Afghan security forces outside the American consulate in the western city of Herat.

Police said two soldiers were killed, along with five of the attackers, while the US said all of its consulate staff were safe.

US special forces entered the area to secure the compound, Afghan police said.

It was unclear whether insurgents had made it inside the consulate building in relatively peaceful Herat, the main city in Afghanistan's west near the Iranian border.

"There was a suicide car bomb ... then gun shots inside the consulate compound," a police official in Herat told Reuters.
