Seven arrests over boy's eye gouging

A mother in Mexico has been arrested on suspicion of gouging out the eyes of her five-year-old son during a ceremony.

Police said on Thursday they had arrested seven people, including the boy's parents, after his eyeballs were pulled out during the ritual in Nezahualcoyotl, a working-class neighbourhood of Mexico City.

'Dying bride' lied to fund wedding

A New York bride, who faked having terminal cancer to swindle well-wishers into funding her dream wedding and honeymoon to the Caribbean, has been ordered to repay more than $13,000 (€10,380) to her victims.

Jessica Vega (25) pleaded guilty last month to fraud and forgery charges for deceiving people in the Hudson Valley area of New York into thinking she had only a few months to live.

Rats return to city of Pied Piper fame

The German city of Hamelin may be in need of another Pied Piper -- it seems the rats are back.

City officials say a popular fountain has been put out of service after the rodents gnawed through a power cable. The Lower Saxony city is where, in 1284, legend has it the Pied Piper led all the rats out with his magic pipe into the Weser River.

Pupil makes hash of recipe at school

A teenager has been expelled from school after landing himself and four pupils in hospital -- after lacing their brownies with cannabis.

The 14-year-old took the drug into All Saints College in West Denton, Newcastle, then added it to his cake mix. The pupils were taken to hospital but were found to have suffered no ill-effects.

Women better at scents than men

A new study appears to confirm that women have a significantly better sense of smell than men.

More women than men claimed to be able to recognise 14 out of 15 garden scents in the survey of 2,000 people for 'Gardeners' World' magazine, and recognition improved with age.

Former pornstar crashes into pole

Former adult film star Jenna Jameson has been arrested in California on suspicion of driving under the influence after she struck a light pole with her vehicle.

A police statement says a field sobriety test was conducted and there were signs of intoxication. Ms Jameson was later released.
