Brazil's President Michel Temer is recovering from surgery to reduce the size of his prostate and should be discharged on Monday, the hospital where he is being treated has announced.

A statement issued by Sao Paulo's Sirio-Libanes Hospital said Mr Temer underwent surgery on Friday night and spent the night in a semi-intensive care unit.

Earlier this week, the 77-year-old Mr Temer was briefly taken to hospital in Brasilia and had a bladder catheter inserted after doctors diagnosed a urological blockage.

Mr Temer was also recently diagnosed with a partial coronary obstruction which his press office said is being treated with aspirin and a low-fat diet.
