A man suspected of involvement in an attack on a politician killed one officer and injured another during a raid on his home in eastern Karachi before escaping, police in Pakistan said.

Police officer Rao Anwar Ahmed said the suspect was wounded in the swoop on Monday.

He said Abdul Karim Siddiqi was the mastermind of an attack on ethnic politician Khwaja Izharul Hasan on Saturday.

Mr Hasan escaped unhurt but a policeman and a child were killed. Police later chased and fatally shot one of the attackers.

Mr Ahmed said Siddiqi belongs to a militant group and planned to assassinate the politician to ignite violence in the city.

Mr Hasan's party, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, has a history of violent reaction over killing of its people.
