A couple were jailed for five yeas after their newborn daughter was found with more than 100 rat bites when she was just two weeks old.

Erica Shryock and Charles Elliott pleaded guilty in Columbia County Court in Magnolia, Arkansas to a felony charge of permitting the abuse of a minor, according to the New York Post.

The baby was left needing facial reconstruction surgery.

The couple, who were aged 17 and 18 at the time, said they first heard the baby screaming at 5.00am but did not notice something was wrong until 7.30am.

They then waited to bring her to hospital until the mother of Charles Elliot arrived.

A doctor said the child was likely to have been in distress for hours.

A blood-soaked hat and blanket were found in the baby's bassinet and bloody rat footprints were found in the home.

Both parents had a history of drug abuse and mental health issues.
