A woman has been arrested for hiding her stillborn baby in a shoe box and a freezer, after she was afraid of how her family would react to the pregnancy.
Fayzah Al-Khatib (23) allegedly kept the deceased baby girl in a shoe box and then a freezer for multiple days, according to court documents released to the New York Post.
Ms Al-Khatib was charged with obstruction of justice and failure to report a dead body.
Police were alerted when a woman called a local funeral home asking to plan services for the baby's funeral. She said the baby was in the freezer and police were called to intervene.
Ms Al-Khatib brought the baby in a cooler bag to the funeral home and told police she had kept her pregnancy a secret from her religious family, according to the New York Post.
She claimed she gave birth to the baby at seven months pregnant and realised the baby was stillborn when she didn't cry.
According to the New York Post, Ms Al-Khatib said she then placed the baby in a shoe box for the next day and a half.
An autopsy could not determine whether the baby was stillborn.
She is due to begin trial in July.
