Woman (24) sentenced to 40 years for murdering friend, taking unborn baby from her womb
A New York woman who ripped her pregnant friend's unborn baby from her womb has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison.
Ashleigh Wade (24), from the Bronx, apologised as she was handed down her sentence.
"I just want to say I’m so, so sorry and no words can express how sorry I am. I can’t say it enough. I’m sorry," Wade told the court, according to the New York Daily News.
"I wish I knew why, and I don’t, and I try so hard, and I’m so sorry."
The young woman was convicted last month of the second-degree murder of her friend Angelikque Sutton on Nov. 20, 2015.
The date was due to have been Sutton’s wedding day.
The court heard how Sutton, aged 22 and eight months pregnant, stopped by Wade’s home on the way to her civil marriage ceremony.
Wade stabbed Sutton multiple times before slitting her throat, and ripping the unborn baby girl from her friend's womb.
Her solicitor told the court she suffers from undiagnosed mental health issues.
Authorities told the court she planned to pass the baby off as her own, and had faked a pregnancy in the months up to the crime.
The baby girl survived the incident.
The judge said it was not a crime of passion or impulse, but the killing had been "carefully planned and researched".
