Video footage captured by a news station in the US show a brave man pulling over on the roadside to save a rabbit from the blazing California wildfires.

RMG News posted the video online and it has since gone viral, with many people commending the man for his actions.

Witnesses said he pulled over after spotting the wild rabbit near the flames raging through Santa Barbara County.

Nobody has yet been able to track down the hero.

A state of emergency was declared in Los Angeles on Wednesday after mass evacuations were ordered due to wildfires wreaking havoc across California.

The largest and most destructive of the wildfires in southern California has grown to 140 square miles and fire officials have said the worst may be yet to come.

The 90,000-acre fire burning in Ventura County, northwest of Los Angeles, has swept through ridges and canyons to the sea and Santa Ana winds that drove it are expected to return with a vengeance overnight.
