Watch: Can you see why this lady's 'tough year' broke a judge's heart?
A judge took pity on a grieving mum by clearing almost €350 worth of parking fines after hearing about her "tough year."
The woman, known only as Andrea, was fined $400 for unpaid parking tickets which she said she got through unfortunate circumstances.
Following the death of her son, she describes how she got a ticket when she went to social security to sort out his finances.
“I was his rent payee, they took my money because he had owed money,” she said.
On another occasion she claimed the “parking meter wasn’t working,” when she got fined.
“It’s like I can’t win,” she said, she also got a ticket when she was at eviction court because her landlord was trying to evict her, “I got a ticket, he won possession of the apartment”.
Providence Judge Frank Caprio looked visibly moved by her case.
He remarked: "I think we can all express sympathy to you and understand the trauma that you have experienced.
"I am going to take all of the circumstances that you just explained to me into consideration and see if I can balance the equities to protect the interest of the city and take into consideration the horrific story that you just told us relative to your son.
"I don’t think anyone in their lifetime would ever want to experience that."
The judge took pity on her and decided to reduce the fine to $50.
When she made him aware that she would be left with only $5, he decided to “dismiss everything” and wished her luck.
He said: "With that, best wishes and I hope that things turn around good for you. Good luck to you."
