The family of 97-year-old twin sisters who died in freezing temperatures after falling outside one of their homes said the two lived with charm, grace, kindness and style.

Police said Jean Young Haley and Martha Young Williams died after they fell outside Ms Haley's house in Barrington, Rhode Island, and became stranded in the cold.

A neighbour found the sisters on Saturday morning.

Overnight temperatures in the area had dropped as low as minus 11C.

Their family issued a statement thanking people who have extended condolences and recalled the pair as an inspiration with a great passion for life.

Police have said it appears Ms Williams fell in the driveway, and Ms Haley fell as she tried to call for help.
