'Their generation stuck together' - nine elderly couples renew their vows in heartwarming video
Nine elderly couples renewed their vows in a heartwarming video captured at a senior centre.
The special event was organized by Carolina SeniorCare in Lexington, North Carolina.
Reverend Misty York, who performed the ceremony told Independent.ie that it "was like a dream" for the particpiants.
"Our senior care centre participants have been poor their whole lives and many were too poor to have a wedding.
"It was beautiful seeing the elderly participants dressed up in wedding attire renewing their vows."
The idea started small and soon nine couples wanted to take part.
The whole community pitched in, making it a special day for the brides and grooms.
"A local baker donated a three-tier cake, a beauty salon did hair and make-up and people donated wedding dresses and suits.
"One woman (58) even lost 40 pounds so she could fit into her dress."
Reverend York said that the whole event was "heartwarming".
"One woman was married 40 years to her husband but never had a wedding band because she was so poor. He presented her with one when they renewed their vows and she wept. She never was able to afford one before."
She added that the couples had a wonderful day and haven't stopped talking about it since.
"In their generation they fixed their problems and instead of walking away, they stuck together. We wanted to do something nice for them."
