A teenager gave birth on the side of the road after a car crash, minutes before she died from her injuries.

Joanna Delgado (18) was in her third trimester of pregnancy when she was involved in the head-on-collision at Five Points in Fresno County, California after 7pm Sunday.

Tragically Ms Delgado and the other driver, Adriana Solorio Romero both died in the incident.

Your Central Valley reports that the teenager gave birth by Cesarean Section at the scene.

The baby was rushed to hospital but sadly died on Monday, it is not yet known exactly how far along Joanna was in her pregnancy but the sheriff's office reports it was between six and nine months.

Ms Delgado's male passenger (16) remains in hospital with critical injuries, according to US reports.

Indicating that she had a daughter, a Go Fund Me page has been set up "In Loving Memory of Joanna and Mila."

Ms Delgado was due to graduate on Thursday from  Tranquillity High School and a moment of silence will be held in her honour.

Principal Jim Reed paid tribute to Ms Delgado, saying: "She was a wonderful student, she was very well liked by her classmates and teachers."
