A teenager and his girlfriend have been arrested for leaving a baby in a hot car for four hours, which resulted in his death, Arizona police said.

Teenager Jose Garcia Jr (18), the baby’s uncle and Monique Avila were arrested on a  count of child abuse after leaving five-month-old Israel Avila in the backseat of a car parked outside an apartment complex in Peoria on Sunday morning.

Ms Avila said found the infant when she went to collect Garcia’s mother from work.

She told police she rushed the child inside an apartment complex and called emergency services.

However, the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

Avila and Garcia Jr. said they were going to babysit the boy, but had forgotten him in the car after dropping his mother off at work.

“This serves as a tragic reminder to take that extra second to double check your vehicle to ensure that you are not leaving any children or pets behind," a spokesperson for the Peoria Police Department said.
