US president Donald Trump has responded to the release of Robert Mueller's report into Russian election interference, saying: "This should never happen to another president again."

President Trump's legal team said the results of the investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller vindicate him and show he acted properly when he fired James Comey, the former director of the FBI.

Mr Trump said he was "having a good day" following the release of the Mueller report, adding: "It's called no collusion, no obstruction."

Mr Mueller, a former FBI director, unearthed "numerous links" between the Russian government and Mr Trump's campaign, but concluded there was not enough evidence to establish that the campaign engaged in a criminal conspiracy with Moscow in its election meddling.

Yesterday's release after a 22-month investigation was a watershed moment in Mr Trump's tumultuous presidency and inflamed partisan passions ahead of his 2020 re-election bid.

Democrats said the report contained disturbing evidence of wrongdoing by Mr Trump, but there was no immediate indication they would try to remove him from office through impeachment.
