The organisers of the prestigious Kennedy Centre Honours say they are grateful Donald and Melania Trump refused to attend this year's awards after one honouree threatened a boycott.

The awards, which recognise the best artists and performers in the US, are traditionally always attended by the first lady and, sometimes the president.

"In choosing not to participate in this year's honours activities, the administration has graciously signalled its respect for the Kennedy Centre," a statement said. This year's recipients were producer Norman Lear - who despises Mr Trump - rapper and actor LL Cool J, choreographer Carmen de Lavallade and singers Lionel Richie and Gloria Estefan.
