A suspected drunk driver killed two people and injured seven others, most of them riding bikes, on a busy New Orleans thoroughfare during Mardi Gras.

Authorities say they are waiting for the results of a blood alcohol test, but they believe the suspect was impaired at the time of the crash on Saturday evening.

He identified the suspect arrested at the scene as Tashonty Toney (32), the son of a local police officer.

Saturday was Mr Toney's birthday. He now faces two counts of vehicular homicide, seven counts of vehicular negligent injury, hit and run, and reckless operation.

The crash happened along Esplanade Avenue, a leafy street that connects the city's biggest park with the French Quarter.
