One killed, five others injured after large tree falls on top of wedding party in California park

One person was killed and five others were injured after a large tree fell on a wedding party taking photographs in a park in Southern California.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday, left several people trapped under the tree at Whittier’s Penn Park.

Local police responded to the emergency at approximately 4.30pm.

Emergency services rushed a number of people to hospital, where one lost their fight with life.

Another, a four-year-old girl, is in critical condition as a result of head trauma.

Witnesses described hearing a loud crack and seeing a number of people running from the area.

The police had no other details that were immediately available.

In a statement issued to the media, they said; "This is an ongoing investigation and it is unknown at this time as to what may have caused the tree to fall.
