Man 'killed girlfriend hours after being released from prison'
A man who was imprisoned for strangling his estranged girlfriend killed her in her home just hours after being released from prison.
Jerome Rivers (52) was released from Rikers Island prison and called Gia Pender (49) to ask if he could stay over.
The terrified woman warned her neighbours he was coming the New York Post reports.
“If anything happens to me, give this to my mother,” she told neighbours.
He was also imprisoned for sex offences in 2013.
The next morning at 6am Rivers called police to say a "thump" has awoken him from sleep and Ms Pender was on the bedroom floor.
He denied killing her.
Post-mortem investigations determined Ms Pender had died by strangulation.
Rivers was arraigned Sunday on charges of second-degree murder and criminal contempt, and held without bail.
Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said the killing was “senseless".
