Former pastor accused of choking baby girl in checkout line

A former pastor has been accused of choking a baby girl in a Walmart checkout line.

The incident occurred in Kansas City on Wednesday morning at 7.30am.

Oleh Zhownirovych (54) was arrested after police received a report he had picked up a sleeping baby from the mother's trolley and put his hands around the child's neck, Kansas City Star reports.

Security staff and other shoppers managed to take the child from his arms and held him down until police arrived.

The four-month-old was unharmed in the attack.

Zhownirovych faces charges of aggravated battery causing intentional harm.

The former pastor is now being held on a $100,000 bond.

Zhownirovych was listed as a pastor online as recently as 10 months ago.

He is being screened for mental health and drug and alcohol screening.
