A farmer cut off his own leg with a pocket knife after it became trapped in a piece of machinery on his isolated land.

Kurt Kaser (63), from Nebraska, was unloading corn when he climbed out of his truck and stepped on the opening of a grain hopper.

With no phone to call for help and the knowledge no one would come to his aid, he made the agonising decision to amputate his leg.

He told KETV: "I thought 'the only way I'm getting outta here is to cut it off'."

After freeing himself, he crawled 50 metres to the nearest phone to get help. (© Independent News Service)
