Man reportedly refused to leave his vehicle when he was stopped by police in Anaheim
A dad of six was shot dead by US cops in California when he failed to get out of his car during a legal stop.
Shocking video captured the incident in Anaheim which occurred on Saturday evening.
Officers sprung into dramatic action when the 33-year-old suspect pulled out a lighter and a container.
The man has been identified as Michael Anthony Perez (33) - a father of six.
"We felt this guy was going to light himself on fire or blow the car up," Police spokesman Lt Fred Lopez said told KTLA news.
Lt Perez had locked himself in his minivan for about half an hour before police smelled gasoline and jumped into action.
Lopez says: "We thought it could be combustible, so they felt that a plan needed to be put into place to save his life".
The police used high force hoses to flush him out of his vehicle.
In video captured at the scene shouting and the sounds of shots being fired can be heard.
It is also alleged that the suspect pulled out a knife.
"The mere fact that somebody chooses to arm themselves is, in fact, a threat to officer safety and to the safety of people around, so we do construe that as a threat," Lt Lopez said during an interview with KTLA news.
