A college student has claimed she was kicked out of her school gym for wearing a cropped top.

South Carolina student Sarah Villafane's latest gym selfie has gone viral after she slammed the school for asking her to wear a different shirt.

The student at the College of Charleston said she was asked to put on a different shirt, but ignored the request because she had worn the same outfit all day at school.

Writing on her Facebook status, which has received thousands of likes, shares and comments, she said she was approached by an employee who asked her to change clothing.

"He says, ‘Are you gonna put a shirt on?’

"And I said, ‘Well if this isn’t a shirt … no. I’m not gonna put a shirt on.

So I just got kicked out of the College of Charleston student gym for wearing this outfit. Like not allowed to work out....

"I literally bought this outfit to work out in because it’s COMFORTABLE.

"What is the issue? Why can’t I work out in this outfit? Is my belly button distracting to the general 85% male demographic that your gym serves?," she contined.

"I'm forced to leave, WHY? Honestly I’m so floored that I just got kicked out for this."

The college told Yahoo Ms Villafane was asked to change her clothing for health and safety reasons.

They said they require a full shirt to be worn "in order to minimise skin exposure to possible infectious agents."
