Beyonce steals Britney's thunder
Britney Spears made her eagerly anticipated return to the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), nine years on from her tragic performance at the VMAs in 2007.
The 34-year-old performed 'Make Me' from her new album 'Glory' but faced criticism on social media for lip-syncing on stage - and doing it badly.
Nine years ago, Britney was heavily criticised for her out-of-sync VMAs performance at a time when her personal and professional life was falling apart.
This time, dressed in a sparkly gold leotard and matching over-the-knee boots, she performed a duet with rapper G-Eazy.
While some reviews called the mother-of-two's comeback "triumphant", others said Spears struggled to match Beyonce's performance.
Britney "mechanically went through the rhythms in a low-key duet with rapper G-Eazy", they noted, adding the chemistry "wasn't there".
But it was Beyonce who proved once again she is the contemporary rock star, and she used the VMA stage to showcase her skills, outshining both Spears and Rihanna.
Beyonce won eight awards, including video of the year, and sang live, danced and worked the crowd during five songs from her visual album 'Lemonade' in an epic 16-minute concert on Sunday that had the audience at Madison Square Garden in awe.
