A baby has been found dead after being left inside a van as temperatures in Arizona reached 30C.

Phoenix Fire Department officials said a crew was dispatched about a report of a child found in a van at a school car park on Tuesday afternoon.

But when firefighters arrived on scene, they say the child was pronounced dead.

The name and gender of the four-month-old child have not yet been released and police are investigating.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the inside of a car can heat up to 49C in 30 minutes even when the outside temperature is 29C.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix said the temperature was forecast to reach 32C.

It is unclear what the temperature was inside the van.
