Mystery millionaire hides $100 bills around US city
A mysterious millionaire has been leaving envelopes containing hundred dollar bills around San Francisco’s Bay Area before tweeting clues of how to find it to followers.
So far the anonymous donor, who says they are keen to give back to the community and tweets under the name of @hiddencash, is estimated to have splashed out more than $10,000 (£5,944).
Residents of Los Angeles and New York will also soon get the opportunity to benefit from Hidden Cash’s largesse, after he or she announced plans to begin distributing envelopes of cash there too.
Little is known about the mystery benefactor, other than that they are a rich property mogul who feels bad about the discrepancy between rich and poor in San Francisco, where the wealth gap is the largest in the United States.
In an interview with the Bold Italic website, Hidden Cash said: “I’ve made millions of dollars the last few years, more than I ever imagined, and yet many friends of mine, and people who work for me, cannot afford to buy a modest home in the Bay Area.
“This has caused me quite a bit of reflection. I am determined to give away some of the money I make, and, in addition to charity, to do it in fun, creative ways like this.”
In an email to the Huffington Post, the millionaire added that he or she “want[ed] to start a nationwide movement” around their anonymous charitable giving.
"I am OK with giving out at least $1,000 (£594) a day for the foreseeable future,” the donor said. “It will not affect my finances significantly.
"We are planning to add more cities, starting with LA next weekend, and NYC shortly afterwards."
The benefactor said they were remaining anonymous in order to maintain a serious reputation with their business associates.
Each time the millionaire hides an envelope, a tweet goes out from the address @HiddenCash with cryptic clues about the location. A message in the envelope asks the finder to tweet photographs of their discovery, which are then re-tweeted by @HiddenCash.
Recent hiding places include a key box at a yoga studio and an abandoned phone box next to a coffee shop.
