A murder probe has been launched after severed legs were found in a bin on an up-market street in Rome, while a head and torso were discovered in refuse elsewhere in the Italian capital.

Officers are questioning the brother of the suspected victim after the discovery of a woman's remains.

A woman alerted police on Tuesday evening after spotting the legs as she rummaged through the bin.

She is reportedly in shock after the grisly discovery.

Media reports said CCTV footage from a nearby shop on Monday night recorded a man throwing something into the rubbish bin where the legs were found.

Officers held up a white sheet near one bin on Wednesday to block the view of onlookers.
