World news in brief: 5 executed for rape in Afghanistan

AFGHAN authorities have executed five men convicted of armed robbery and gang rape in a case that galvanised the nation this summer. The men were hanged in Puli Charkhi prison, in Kabul.

In August, eight men stopped an Afghan family's car outside Kabul and sexually assaulted four of the women in the family, including one who was pregnant. Three of the suspects remain at large.

Dad's Army movie BILL Nighy, Michael Gambon, Toby Jones and Tom Courtenay are among the stars who will appear in a big-screen remake of classic sitcom 'Dad's Army'. Jones will star as Captain Mainwaring, Nighy will appear as Sergeant Wilson and Courtenay will play Corporal Jones. Gambon will fill the role of Private Godfrey and there will also be roles for Catherine Zeta Jones, Sarah Lancashire and Mark Gatiss.

Plea deal for ex-priest

A defrocked priest in Puerto Rico accused of lewd acts involving a 13-year-old boy has accepted a plea deal as his trial was set to begin.

Edwin Mercado Viera pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and now faces between three to eight years in prison.

Nothing to sneeze at

Peter Fletcher wondered, one day in 2007, how many times he might sneeze in his life. So he started counting, and now every time he sneezes he notes the time and date, where he is, and what he is doing at the time. His sneeze count is currently just over 4,000, according to an interview he did with the BBC.

Crime knock-out

A WOULD-be robber was beaten up when he found out the hard way that a convenience store worker on the University of Pittsburgh campus was also a former Golden Gloves boxing champ.

Eric Sydnor said he just did what he had to do when Leverett Johnson (45) walked in with a gun.

The hapless thief is still in hospital recovering from his injuries.
