Wanted terrorist killed in drone strike

One of the world's most wanted terrorists, linked to the kidnap of an American soldier, was killed in a drone strike yesterday, along with other senior commanders from the Haqqani network based in Pakistan.

Mullah Sangeen Zadran was accused by the US state department of orchestrating kidnappings, bombings and coordinating the movement of fighters across the border into Afghanistan to engage international forces. In 2010, he appeared in a video alongside the captured American soldier, Bowe Bergdahl.

Pakistani intelligence officials said a drone fired two missiles, destroying a compound in Dargah Mandi, a Haqqani stronghold about six miles from Miranshah.

Residents reported hearing mosques announcing a funeral for Mullah Zadran and intelligence officials confirmed to the AFP news agency that he had been killed.

Mullah Zadran (45) also served as the Taliban's shadow governor in eastern Afghanistan's Paktika province and was placed on the US list of global terrorists in 2011. His appearance in the video alongside Sergeant Bergdahl has led many to suspect he was involved in the kidnapping of the only US soldier being held by extremists.

They have had repeated discussions about exchanging him for some of the high-profile prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
