Syrian activists gear up for week of protests
Activists opposing the regime in Syria announced a week of protests yesterday aimed at breaking the sieges of two areas where scores of people have been shot dead.
Nearly 600 people have died in President Bashir al-Assad's attempts to put down the popular uprising against his rule that has swept provincial towns and cities since mid-March.
Reports from Deraa, in the far south, and Douma, north of Damascus, said government troops had taken up positions on the streets.
British Prime Minister David Cameron denounced the "disgraceful situation" and indicated that the international community would do more in an attempt to protect civilians. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
