The former wife of a Qatari prince has been found dead at her Spanish home, two weeks after losing a custody battle in which she accused her ex-husband of abusing one of their daughters.

Kasia Gallanio (45) had been in a French court fight with Abdelaziz bin Khalifa al-Thani, who strongly denies any abuse, over their three daughters since they separated in 2012 after eight years of marriage.

On Sunday, after one of her daughters told police that her mother had failed to respond to phone calls, officers visited her house in Marbella and found the body.

Local media reported the death as an overdose. Post-mortem results have not been released, but police sources said that there were no apparent signs of violence.

Los Angeles-born Ms Gallanio married Paris-based Mr Thani, the uncle of Qatar’s emir, in 2004.

They have twin daughters, now 17, and their third daughter is 15.

On May 19, a Paris court dismissed Ms Gallanio’s custody claim.

“My client was devastated by this decision. I think that, above all, she has died of grief,” Sabrina Boesch, her lawyer, told Le Parisien.

Ms Gallanio is reported to have spent weeks in hospital with depression late last year and has also visited detox clinics in her battle against alcoholism.
