A couple who snapped a selfie in front of a burning skyscraper in Dubai have been criticised on social media.

Three hours before the scheduled fireworks show in Dubai on New Year's Eve, a blaze erupted at the Address Downtown Hotel.

The fire blazed for over twelve hours and fourteen people were injured, with one suffering a heart attack during the evacuation.

One couple were undeterred by the panic in the city, going as far as to snap a selfie in front of the burning building.

Writing on Instagram, they wrote "Happy New Year My dear Dubai. May God bless you and keep you safe", adding "you always surprise us with the biggest fireworks".

Social media users were outraged, with one calling the photograph "the most inappropriate selfie ever".

The fire broke out at Address Downtown Hotel around 9.30pm local time on New Year's Eve, just three hours before the New Year's Eve fireworks were due to begin at the nearby Burj Khalifa skyscraper.

Around 1million people had gathered to watch Dubai's award-winning fireworks show from the skyscraper.

People ran to safety inside a nearby mall when the blaze erupted. The fire affected at least twenty stories of the hotel.

Firefighters fought the blaze for more than twelve hours, which eventually burned out this morning.
