Irishman injured during protests as others are urged to leave country
AN Irish citizen was injured during riots in Egypt between pro- and anti-government supporters.
The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it was giving consular assistance to an Irish citizen after an incident on Wednesday night.
It is understood that the injuries were to an Irish male and are not life threatening.
The department advises against all travel to Egypt, telling Irish citizens in the country to be particularly vigilant after noon prayers.
The department has given assistance to around 400 Irish citizens so far, a spokeswoman said yesterday.
"We are actively assisting approximately 25 citizens who are seeking to leave the country.
"A further 60 Irish citizens have indicated that they wish to remain in Egypt," she added.
