Government to provide more relief funding
THE Government is to provide more funding to help Pakistan flood victims.
News of the extra aid came as Dublin firefighter Dennis Keeley set off to join an emergency response team in Pakistan, and as moves were made to recruit dozens more Irish paramedics to join the aid effort.
At the International Association of Firefighters conference in San Diego, Irish delegate John Kidd said Ireland should be able to send up to 80 volunteers and many officers were willing to travel.
Ireland has now contributed €2m in humanitarian assistance -- on top of the €2.5m donated by the Irish public to charities.
Further funding on top of the €2m will be provided once a comprehensive Post Disaster Needs Assessment has been carried out, said Junior Minister for Overseas Aid Peter Power.
