Fears of chemical warfare as Assad moves weapons arsenal

Alex Spillius

Syria is beginning to move some of its chemical weapons arsenal out of storage facilities, according to US intelligence, raising fears that they could be deployed against rebels or civilians.

The country's undeclared sarin, mustard gas and cyanide have long worried the West and its allies, who have been looking for signs amid the rebellion against Bashar al-Assad's government of any change in the location of those weapons, believed to be the world's largest stockpile.

American officials held differing interpretations of the meaning of the moves, with some concerned the weapons will be used but others reckoning the president is trying to safeguard them from his opponents. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
