Nelson Mandela is no longer able to speak because of tubes in his mouth that help him to breathe, his former wife has said.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela said the 95-year-old former South African president remained "quite ill", although not critical, as he convalesced at his home in Johannesburg with the help of a team of 22 doctors.

"Though the pneumonia has cleared, his lungs remain sensitive, hence the tubes," she said. "He communicates with the face, you see. But the doctors have told us they hope to recover his voice." (© Daily Telegraph, London)
