A man involved in a property dispute has stabbed six people to death in China and injured more, police said.

The attacks happened in a village in the Huairou district of Beijing, according to a blog on the police's publicity office website.

The Chinese capital covers a large area and some rural areas like Huairou come under its remit.

The statement said police captured a 34-year-old suspect.

Initial investigations found that a resident in Huairou's Wanghua village stabbed "many people" with a knife because of a property dispute involving his family.

Police said the injured were taken to hospital but did not say how many.

The statement said the suspect had the surname Zhou, and hi s family members reported he had a history of mental illness.
