Madrid civic officials hope to cut pollution levels by limiting vehicle circulation in the Spanish capital for the first time, using a system based on licence plate numbers.

Deputy mayor Marta Higueras said that barring some exceptions, vehicles with plates ending in even numbers would not be allowed to circulate between 6.30am and 9pm on Thursday.

Other measures including a ban on street parking for non-residents and reduced speed limits are already in force.

The town hall said it is applying the restrictions because of excess levels of nitrogen dioxide. It pledged to review the restrictions at a later date.
