Lawyers plead for release of Halawa siblings detained over Cairo protest

THE Department of Foreign Affairs said yesterday that it continues to provide consular assistance to the four members of the Halawa family currently being detained in Egypt.

Omaima, 20, Fatima, 22, Somaia, 27, and 17-year-old Ibrahim have now been detained for almost two weeks in Cairo. They found themselves trapped inside the city's al-Fateh mosque after taking part in a protest.

At a court hearing on Friday, lawyers for the Halawa siblings requested that they be freed as soon as possible. They also asked that Irish representatives be allowed to attend when the matter next comes before the court.
