Two people have been shot in separate incidents close to two Olympic Games sites, police have confirmed.

Last night, police shot a mugger near the stadium where the Rio Olympics opening ceremony took place.

While a woman was killed when she was driving past one of the main entrances to the Olympic Boulevard, which hosts the Olympic flame.

The architect (51) was attacked by three armed muggers, police said. As she tried to flee, she was shot in the head.

Meanwhile, an anti-bomb squad at the Olympic Games in Rio detonated an unattended backpack near the end of the cycling course today, a spokeswoman for the public security department said.

Officials expect the bag may have belonged to a homeless man, but protocol requires any unattended objects to be destroyed, she said.

The controlled blast occurred at 1.45 pm (4.45 pm GMT), the spokeswoman said
