A 26-year-old Brazilian model has collapsed on the catwalk in front of horrified onlookers and died.

Tales Soares staggered while turning at the end of the stage during his performance at Sao Paulo Fashion Week in Brazil on Saturday night.

The audience had thought his collapse was part of the show until emergency workers rushed onto the stage as he began foaming at the mouth.

They were unable to revive him and he was later pronounced dead at a hospital in Sao Paulo. The exact cause of his death remains unclear.

The show went on despite Mr Soares's death, with models brandishing handwritten placards on the catwalk with messages such as "Luto" (mourning) and "Amor" (love).

Mr Soares was employed by prestigious Brazilian agency Base MGT, which issued a statement denying drugs played a part in his death.

Brazilian news websites have been rife with speculation. One reported he had tripped on the straps of his sandals. Another outlet alleged vegetarian food was unavailable and that Mr Soares, who did not eat meat, had therefore not eaten for a long time. Organisers denied that was the case.
