Last chance for gran on death row

Giles Whittell

A BRITISH grandmother faces death by lethal injection unless a final appeal that was launched yesterday can persuade the US Supreme Court that she deserves a second trial.

Linda Carty (51), a native of St Kitts in the Caribbean, who says she was framed for murder by career criminals, has been on death row in Texas since 2002.

She denies the 2001 murder of Joana Rodriguez, a tenant of the apartment building where Ms Carty lived. The victim was found suffocated in a car boot.

Two trial witnesses testified that Ms Rodriguez had been abducted by four men, who prosecutors claimed Carty had hired to kill the younger woman for her newborn baby.

Despite the lack of any forensic evidence linking Carty to the crime, the jury found her guilty and condemned her to death.

A briefing paper submitted to the Supreme Court by the British government has urged a retrial, because the Texan authorities failed to notify British consular officials of her arrest. (© The Times, London)
